QUESTIONS YOU HAVE ASKED

SURGEON
What sort of GCSEs should I do if I want to be a surgeon? Can I still do a P.E GCSE? (Female aged 13)

If you want to be a surgeon, you have to be a doctor first and do Medicine at a university. To do Medicine, you need some sciences at GCSE level (Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology) and Maths. Some universities like you to have Latin (which I took but hated - although it certainly helps if you want to learn another language). Again, most medical schools like you to do Science at “A” Level such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry but you could do Maths instead. Sadly, if you are good at English, Geography, PE, or languages, it helps to do them at GCSE level as well as sciences!!! Good luck.

ARCHITECT
Hi:) I would like to be an architect when I'm older. What GCSEs should I take? (Female aged 13)

It doesn't really matter what GCSEs you take but it certainly helps if you have Physics and Maths and, if available at your school, some sort of design or art GCSE. Other than that, try to get good grades in all your GCSEs so you can plan to go to university! Good luck.

ACTING
I love acting and dancing and spend all my free time doing out of school classes and workshops. I would like to go to drama school when I leave college, but my parents want me to get a “proper” job like a career in medicine, especially as I got quite good GCSE results. How can I tell my parents that acting is more than just a hobby? I don't want to disappoint them, but this is what I love.

Sit down with your parents and explain that you don't want to be a doctor or solicitor, but want to be a “professional” actor. Let them know and understand that, to you, it is not just a hobby, and it's something that you want to do professionally. They will understand, especially when you explain that with your GCSE results, if you can't get a job immediately acting, or can't get into drama school, you can always get a temporary job with your current qualifications. And if you change your mind, you can always get into university later in life.

NOT GOOD AT ANYTHING
I'm not good at anything, and don't know what job to get when I leave school. I don't want to end up working in a shop but there is nothing that I'm interested in or good at.

Lots of people have no idea what they want to do, and simply go to university or college because it's “what's expected of them”. That's why I went to medical school. My dad was a GP, I did well in science A levels and was “expected” to become a doctor, even though I had no idea what that meant! I think it is very helpful to take a year “off” - get a job doing something you like, or think you like, and try it out. Everybody is good at something! If you don't like one job after a couple of months, try another. You will soon find out (a) what you are good at, and (b) what you enjoy. I was lucky, 'cause I enjoyed medicine, but that was only by coincidence!

MOST MONEY
What job earns most money?

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a very large oil company (such as BP) - but you will have to work very hard to get there!
